We had the pleasure of exploring downtown, going to the beach numerous times, and staying at the most beautiful houseboat overlooking the harbor. There are so many unique things to do in Wilmington NC and I can’t wait for you to experience them!
Quick Guide
Top Things To Do: Visit Wrightsville Beach, Grab a coffee from Hidden Grounds, Shop at the Cargo District, Stroll the Riverwalk, and cocktails from Concorde Espresso
When To Visit: Spring and Fall are considered the best times to visit, but I don’t think you can go wrong in any season! This is coastal so if you’re visiting between June and November check the Hurricane forecasts
Where to Stay: The Cove Wilmington, Staybridge Suites, or The Quoin Hotel
1. Visit The Beach
If you’re in Wilmington, visiting the beach is a must-do activity. I thought this was one of the best things to do and the amazing thing is that there are numerous options.

Wrightsville Beach
Wrightsville Beach is easily the closest and most accessible beach from Wilmington NC. The ride to the beach is only about 15 minutes and you can choose from multiple public access points.
We loved walking the dogs here and letting them explore the waves. The color of the water is stunning and taking a dip feels so refreshing.
You can also visit the Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier to participate in some fishing, watch the surfers, or catch a beautiful sunrise.
Carolina Beach
Carolina Beach is a little over 20 minutes from downtown Wilmington NC. There’s a fantastic state park where you can camp if you’re adventurous.
This area gives you access to beautiful shoreline, but you can also check out the hiking trails/boardwalks available to the public.
If you’ve never been beach camping, I highly recommend it. I love waking up and walking to the water to enjoy the sun peeking out over the waves.
Kure Beach
Kure Beach is a little further along the coast than Carolina Beach State Park. This area is super laid back and perfect for a day trip from Wilmington.
From watching people fish at Kure Beach Pier (or participating), visiting the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, or simply enjoying the sites at Fort Fisher Recreation Area, there’s something for everyone.
Topsail Beach

Topsail Beach is slightly further from Wilmington NC and requires a full day to really get the most out of it.
The drive takes about 50 minutes, but you drive through Surf City on your way which has many fun places to eat. My friend Lauren lives in Wilmington and highly recommends grabbing a burger at Surf City Smash.
Topsail Beach is on Topsail Island, a 26-mile-long barrier island along the coast of North Carolina. The beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and hunting for shells.
Lea-Hutaff Island is nearby and ideal for bird-watching and exploring. You can also visit Soundside Park for amazing sunset views, picnic areas, and a playground for the kids.
Bald Head Island
One of the most unique areas near Wilmington NC is Bald Head Island. This secluded coastal destination is located at the southernmost tip of the state’s coastline, where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Cars are not allowed on Bald Head Island. The only way to access it is via ferry. You need to resort to other means of transportation while you’re there like walking, biking, or utilizing a golf cart.
The island has some beautiful creeks and marshes which are great for kayaking or paddle boarding. Golf enthusiasts can play at Bald Head Island Club’s beautiful seaside golf course.
East Beach and South Beach are both pristine beaches worth exploring and relaxing at while you’re there! You should also visit Old Baldy Lighthouse if you have the time as it’s the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina.
2. Explore Downtown
Luckily, there are so many things to do in downtown Wilmington NC and we loved spending time here. The historic district has cobblestone streets that add to the city charm.
Downtown is situated along the Cape Fear River and is known for its thriving arts, dining, and nightlife scene. The downtown area also has direct access to the Riverwalk.
3. Do the Riverwalk

The Wilmington Riverwalk is one of the best attractions downtown. It follows the Cape Fear River for 1.75 miles and provides stunning waterfront views.
The best part about the Riverwalk are the many restaurants and shops along it allowing you to pop off for a quick snack or, if you’re like me, a glass of wine.
4. Stay at The Cove Wilmington

If you’re looking for a unique addition to your time in Wilmington, a stay at The Cove is exactly what you need.
The Cove Wilmington is a houseboat accommodation located on the North side of downtown with easy access to all the amazing activities on this list.
Not only is the experience one of a kind, but the patio views are truly something else. Watching the sunset from the deck while eating dinner with friends is a memory I will always cherish.

Plus, it’s dog-friendly meaning you don’t have to leave your best friend behind. They even provide you with essentials like poop bags, treats, and wipes.
5. See Airlie Gardens
Airlie Gardens is a stunning 67-acre public garden in Wilmington, North Carolina. This spot is known for its breathtaking landscapes, historic oak trees, vibrant flowers, and serene water features.
The gardens were originally established in 1901 as private gardens and are now open to the general public.
Some of the most popular attractions include The Airlie Oak, a 500-year-old live oak tree, Swan Lake, and the Butterfly House. This is a fantastic place to capture some photographs on your trip.
6. Visit A Colonial Home
Wilmington, North Carolina, is home to multiple colonial and antebellum homes due to its deep history as a port city dating back to the 18th century.
Bellamy Mansion Museum
Bellamy Mansion Museum was the home of a wealthy planter and physician. It was built right before the Civil War and includes the original slave quarters.
This is a great place to learn more about the complex history of the South as the museum offers tours, exhibits, and events throughout the year.
Latimer House
The Latimer House is a beautifully preserved Victorian-style home that was owned by the Latimer Family.
The house features furnishings, books, and artifacts from the 19th century. It is also the headquarters for the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society.
Burgwin-Wright House
Burgwin-Wright House is exceptionally unique as it is built on the foundation of a former jail and is one of the few colonial-era homes left in Wilmington.
The home has formal gardens and is known for its Georgian Architecture.
7. Sip on a Cocktail
Wilmington NC has the cocktail scene locked down and if you love a good cocktail, you won’t be disappointed!

Concorde Espresso Bar
The Concorde Espresso Bar is probably the most popular cocktail spot and hardest to get a reservation at. Not only is this place incredibly vibey, but the cocktails are to die for.
You can sit inside or outside, but unless it’s pouring you should choose outside. The patio has a ton of twinkle lights and you’ll sit next to a fire.
They offer a smores kit to pair your cocktail which is a must-try if you like dessert. I had the superb lychee martini, but everyone’s drinks at our table were phenomenal.
The Underfront Co.
A boutique cocktail bar downtown, Underfront Co. is known for its intimate ambiance and historic decor.
You can get all sorts of drinks here from curated craft cocktails to local beer and wine, as well as snacks like charcuterie and antipasti.
The best feature of this spot is the live music from Thursday to Saturday.
Sugo
If you’re hunting for a great dinner and cocktail place, Sugo might be the ticket. This Italian Steakhouse not only has delicious cocktails but also delivers a full menu that is to die for.
The restaurant serves a variety of classic Italian food and is known for its signature “Sugo” sauce, a cherished family recipe. Some of the best cocktails include Shimmers & Shines, Dewdropper, and The Offering.
Banter
Banter is the coziest option on this list when it comes to cocktails as it’s reminiscent of a European cafe. The space is situated on the lower level of a historic building with both indoor and outdoor seating.
Market House Beer and Wine
Not specifically cocktails, this newer location is right near the Riverwalk and offers a large selection wines and beers. It also has a bottle shop section with other offerings for those who don’t like alcohol.
I loved the space at Market House Beer and Wine as it embodies the coastal decor. One of the bar areas is also seated at a garage door which they open when the weather is good!
8. Check Out the Wilmington Farmers Market
If you’re a sucker for a good farmers market like me, then you need to check out the Wilmington Farmers Market while you’re in town.
The market takes place year-round (yay for the south!) and takes place at The Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington at 3 Market Street.
You can expect to see local fresh produce, baked goods, flowers/plants, meats/seafood, and handmade goods available for purchase. I love that they also have food trucks available so you can have a snack while you peruse the stalls.
9. Dine at a Local Restaurant
These are all courtesy of my good friend Lauren Richardson with @Laurenssuitcase. If you don’t follow her yet, give her a follow on Instagram for all things Wilmington!

Tacobaby
Did someone say tacos? Tacobaby is so ridiculously cute and the food is yummy.
I loved the bang-bang shrimp tacos and the pineapple margarita. They also have some pretty amazing lunch deals if you’re looking for a quick bite that won’t break the bank.
On Thyme
Originally starting as a food truck, it has become a fixture in the Castle Street area. On Thyme is known for its egg rolls, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and fish.
Pizzeria Don Luca
Pizzeria Don Luca has some of the best pizza in the Wilmington area. The establishment has the cutest outdoor seating and is only minutes from downtown.
Obviously, you must get a pizza while you’re there, but I’ve also heard some amazing things about the wings.
Indochine
Does anyone love Thai and Vietnamese food with as much vigor as I do? Then you need to visit Indochine while you’re in Wilmington!
Not only is the decor here a vibe, but the food is delicious. Must-try dishes include the Pho, Pad Thai, curry, and dumplings!
Bahn Sai
Bahn Sai serves up Casual Asian fusion on a daily basis. They are known for their creative flavors and out-of-the-box takes on Asian food!
Signature items on their menu are the Bahn Sai, the Zelda, and Cobra Fries.
Rx Chicken and Oysters
Rx Chicken and Oysters is a more upscale option you’ll likely want a reservation for. I wouldn’t consider this fancy but don’t dress in sweats and understand that you’ll be paying a little bit more than standard.
The oysters here are unsurprisingly a highlight, but you should also check out some of the hot NC blue crab dip, the deviled eggs, and the pig ears & belly.
Cousins Italian Deli
Cousins Italian Deli is a fantastic lunch option in downtown Wilmington. I mean who doesn’t love a deli sandwich?
The sandwich menu is pretty extensive so I’m sure you’ll find something you like and you can always pair it with a soup or salad of your choice.
10. Shop at Local Stores
The Fuzzy Needle Records & Books

I can’t lie the aesthetic in this shop is so good that I wanted to take a million photos. Unfortunately, other people were shopping the records and books so I had to keep the shutter count to a minimum.
This might have been my favorite spot in the Cargo District because of how different it was from anything I’ve ever seen. It felt like a bookstore and record store mashed into one with a little coffee spot on the side. Seriously, what more could you want?
The Plant Outpost

This was another incredible shop in the Cargo District where we spent too much time. I love plants, but I can’t keep them alive so I leave that job to my husband.
The Plant Outpost has everything you need to care for a plant and an absurd amount of cute plants for purchase. I would have snagged a few if I had room in my car, but we were tight on space. Next time I visit I’m getting one to take home with me.
Cape Fear Market
The Cape Fear Market is located downtown near the Riverwalk and is the perfect spot to get some local goods. We stumbled upon this market while looking for something else and I’m so glad we did.
Not only does this place have an incredibly cool woodworking shop which I ordered a cutting board from, but they also have an affordable vintage store! There were so many good finds and we all purchased something.
The Black Cat Shoppe
If you loved One Tree Hill then you need to make a pit stop in The Black Cat Shoppe. Not only was it featured in the show, but it’s unique and quirky.
The shop sells toys, pop culture novelties, and pranks/gags along with other interesting merchandise. Thi is a great pit stop while you’re strolling downtown or on the Riverwalk.
11. Visit a Speakeasy
The Blind Elephant Speakeasy is a 1920’s inspired speakeasy in downtown Wilmington found down the alley between Port City Java and Front Street Brewery.
The ambiance is top notch and the prohibition-era decor makes you feel transported back in time. There’s also live music from Wednesday to Sunday making it even more fun to visit.
The speakeasy does operate on a membership basis, but it’s only $5 a person so if you are visiting, it doesn’t break the bank. I’d view this as a cover for a club and it gets you into annual events like the Great Gatsby Party, Oscar Party, Kentucky Derby Party, whiskey tastings, and New Year’s Eve celebrations
12. Take a Tour
One Tree Hill Self-Guided Tour
If you didn’t know, One Tree Hill was filmed in Wilmington NC! There are multiple sites you can visit from the show including the iconic bridge as well as both Peyton and Lucas’ homes.
Looking for something a little more structured? You can take a self-guided walking tour to check out all the highlights.
Sailing Tour
It was a little chilly to do a sailing tour when we visited, but it’s on my list for my next trip to the beach. I love getting out on the water and seeing wildlife.
This cruise is at sunset so you’ll have beautiful views of downtown Wilmington as well as hopefully a stunning sky to capture.
Poplar Grove Plantation Tour
The Popular Grove Plantation is about 25 minutes from Wilmington on the way to Topsail. If you’re already headed that way, this is a great addition to your itinerary.
I’m not a huge fan of plantations in general, but I think it’s important to learn about the slave history and educate ourselves on their experience.
The plantation has a farmers market nearby which you can visit for some fresh produce and classes for things like basketry, letterpress, and blacksmithing.
Island Hopping Cruise
This sounded like SO MUCH FUN and if I visit in the warmer months, this would be at the top of my bucket list. I mean, an Island Hopping Cruise?? Sign me up.
The cruise visits uninhabited islands around Wrightsville Beach. You may get an opportunity to see Masonboro Island, the longest undisturbed barrier island ecosystem in southern North Carolina.
There’s also a bar, modern amenities, and room for up to 40 people!
E-bike Tour
E-biking has become one of my favorite activities while traveling and Wilmington is no exception. If you only have a few days, I think this is one of the best things to do to see a large portion of the city.
This e-bike tour is a half-day and includes sightseeing, history, and craft brews.
13. Drive to Carolina Beach State Park
Carolina Beach State Park is easily one of the best things to do in Wilmington NC. Just a short 18-minute drive from downtown Wilmington making it an easy day trip.
The main highlights here include the Flytrap Trail and the Sugarloaf Trail. You can also rent a canoe or kayak to explore the Cape Fear River.
Don’t forget to check out Good Hops Brewing while you’re in the area to quench your thirst after a hike!
14. Grad a Drink from a Local Coffee Shop

Hidden Grounds Coffee
My absolute favorite coffee shop in Wilmington NC was Hidden Grounds Coffee. It’s obviously a local favorite because the line was out the door when we arrived.
The coffee shop is small and the only seating is outside. This is fine since most of the seating is covered. I was obsessed with the vibe here and the merchandise is some of the best I’ve ever seen.
I did indeed purchase a sweatshirt and hat that are now staples in my wardrobe.
Blue Cup Roastery
Looking for a little pick-me-up while shopping at the Cargo District? This is the place to get your caffeine fix.
The patio here is beautiful and the ideal place to take a break if you’re shopping. The coffee is great and the atmosphere is on point.
Maven Coffee
Maven Coffee is a unique and a fun place to explore outside of downtown. The coffee shop is very aesthetically pleasing on the inside giving some Morrocan pastel energy.
My friends said the coffee here is incredible, but since I don’t drink coffee I can’t specifically vouch for it. This isn’t the place to go if you have someone who drinks tea since they only have coffee on the menu.
Maroon Monkey Coffee
A great option downtown is Maroon Monkey Coffee. This is near the Cape Fear Market and has an industrial funky feel.
The matcha here is to die for and if you like specialty lattes, this is the location for you. They have numerous unique lattes like banana’s foster, french toast, and vanilla twist. Plus, if you don’t want to choose get a coffee flight!
15. Check Out the Craft Beer Scene
Edward Teach Brewing
Edward Teach Brewing was probably my favorite brew spot on our visit to Wilmington NC. We had the dogs in tow so we only visited places that are dog-friendly.
This brewery allows dogs on the main level and serves up some great local craft beers. The decor isn’t anything to write home about but the atmosphere is great and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Alcove Beer Garden
Another epic part of the Cargo District is the Alcove Beer Garden. If you’re shopping in the afternoon and need a little break, this is the best place to stop at.
The energy here are great and dog-friendly so you can have your pooch along.
Front Street Brewery
Front Street Brewery has an old-time historic feel and is located near the river as the name suggests.
They have a great selection of brews and happy hour is 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. daily with half-off appetizers. Since this brewery serves a large selection of food, the only dog-friendly place is the outdoor patio.
Flytrap Brewing
Flytrap Brewing is a must-visit in Wilmington NC if you’re a craft beer fan.
They have a fantastic patio which we unfortunately didn’t enjoy since it was raining outside. The dogs are allowed inside (as long as they’re well-behaved) and the beer flights are a great way to try multiple brews.
16. Explore the Battleship North Carolina History Museum
One of the most unique things to do in Wilmington NC is to visit Battleship North Carolina History Museum.
The battleship, moored on Cape Fear, is a prominent World War II memorial and museum. While visiting, you can explore nine levels of the ship including sleeping quarters, gun turrets, mess decks, and more via a self-guided tour.
If you love history and boats, you can’t pass this one up!
17. Snag Some Brunch

Savorez
According to my friend Lauren, Savorez is THE brunch spot in Wilmington. They only do brunch on Sundays so you should aim to get there right when it opens so you can snag a table (they don’t take reservations).
Savorez brunch focuses on Latin flavors with Southern influences including things like Huevos Rancheros, Shrimp & Grits, and fried chicken served in an arepa.
Folks Cafe
Folks Cafe is an unassuming place outside of downtown Wilmington that you need to check out. The food is delicious and you can tell it’s beloved by locals.
I got the breakfast bowl with chorizo and it was very filling. They also serve empanadas which are 100% worth snagging.
The seating here is limited, but we didn’t have much trouble getting a table since it’s more of a hole in the wall.
Drift Coffee Shop
Drift Coffee Shop has a few locations in North Carolina, but if you haven’t been before, this is a good opportunity to try them out.
The vibe here is coastal-inspired and downright aesthetic. I was super impressed with the breakfast sandwiches and my matcha was exactly what I wanted.
If you want a laid-back brunch with good food and coffee I would highly recommend it.
