After staying at Cataloochee Ranch twice in the last two years, I can confidently say this is one of the most memorable places I’ve ever visited.

One of the things I love most about Cataloochee Ranch is that there really isn’t a bad time to visit. I’ve stayed here twice, once in September 2025 and again in March 2026, and both trips felt completely different while still delivering the same exceptional experience.

If you’re hoping to experience fall colors in the Smoky Mountains, late September through mid-October is hard to beat. During my first visit, the weather was perfect for spending long days outdoors horseback riding, feeding cattle, and exploring the property. The cooler temperatures made it easy to enjoy everything the ranch had to offer without constantly changing outfits or searching for shade.

My second visit in March felt much quieter and more peaceful. While the mountains hadn’t fully come alive for spring yet, the trails were uncrowded, the views stretched for miles, and the cooler temperatures were ideal for hiking. We spent much of our trip exploring the property’s private trails and hiking to Hemphill Bald for sunrise, an experience I’ll never forget.

Summer is another great option if you’re looking to take advantage of longer daylight hours and spend as much time outdoors as possible. Just keep in mind that temperatures and humidity can be higher during this time of year in North Carolina, but thankfully the higher elevations will make it slightly more enjoyable than down in the valley.

If I had to choose my favorite season, I’d probably lean toward fall for the combination of comfortable weather, changing leaves, and ranch activities. That said, my spring visit proved that Cataloochee Ranch is the kind of place that shines regardless of the season.

My recommendation? Visit whenever you can. The views, food, accommodations, and service are so consistently exceptional that the experience feels special no matter what time of year you arrive.

One unique aspect of this Cataloochee Ranch review is that I’ve stayed in two completely different types of accommodations during my visits. During my first stay with my friend Dani, we stayed in the Hemphill Classic Suite. On my second visit with my husband, we booked the Delano Cabin.

After experiencing both, I can confidently say that you really can’t go wrong.

Hemphill Classic Suite

During my first stay, Dani and I stayed in the Hemphill Classic Suite, which was the perfect home base for our Cowgirl Camp weekend.

The suite was beautifully designed and felt like the ideal blend of luxury and mountain charm. After spending our days horseback riding, feeding cattle, and enjoying ranch activities, it was wonderful to return to a comfortable space that felt both elevated and relaxing.

One of the things I appreciated most was how connected we felt to everything happening around the ranch. It was easy to walk to meals, activities, and common areas while still having a quiet retreat at the end of the day.

Delano Cabin

For my second visit, my husband and I stayed in the Delano Cabin, and it completely stole my heart.

Best Things To Do at Cataloochee Ranch

The hardest part about staying at Cataloochee Ranch is deciding how to spend your time.

You can start your morning hiking to a mountain bald for sunrise, spend the afternoon learning pottery from a local artist, and finish the evening dancing in a horse barn with locals and fellow guests. That’s exactly what makes this place so special—it doesn’t fit neatly into the typical luxury resort experience.

During my stays, I found myself equally excited about the activities I had planned and the unexpected experiences I stumbled into along the way. From horseback riding through the mountains to feeding cattle and enjoying a picnic lunch at The Swag, every day felt a little different.

These are the experiences that stood out most during my visits.

Hike to Hemphill Bald

One of the biggest perks of staying at Cataloochee Ranch is access to trails that most visitors to the Smokies never get to experience.

During my second visit, my husband and I hiked the private trail connecting Cataloochee Ranch to The Swag, the ranch’s sister property. Not only were the views incredible, but the trail felt peaceful and secluded compared to many popular hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The private access to Hemphill Bald is especially unique and one of the biggest reasons I would return again.

Enjoy a Picnic Lunch at The Swag

Cataloochee Ranch and The Swag are sister properties connected by a private trail, and I highly recommend taking advantage of the picnic lunch experience offered to guests.

The hike itself is beautiful, but the destination is what really makes this experience memorable.

After arriving at The Swag, we were greeted with a picnic spread that included burgers, hot dogs, brats, salads, drinks, and all the fixings. We grabbed our plates and found a spot overlooking the mountains.

I’m not sure if it was the views, the hike beforehand, or the food itself, but it ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip.

Go Horseback Riding

Horseback riding was one of the highlights of my first stay at Cataloochee Ranch.

If you’ve ever wanted to ride through the Smoky Mountains on horseback, this is your chance.

As someone who enjoys horses but isn’t necessarily an expert rider, I appreciated how comfortable and safe the experience felt. The guides were knowledgeable, the horses were well cared for, and the scenery was absolutely stunning.

Even if you’re a little nervous around horses, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this experience.

Feed the Cattle

If you have the opportunity to feed the cattle during your stay, do it.

This ended up being one of the most unexpectedly enjoyable experiences of my first visit. The ranch hand leading the experience was incredibly passionate about the cattle operation and shared insight into everything from daily care to how the animals are raised.

What stood out most was how much pride the staff takes in the ranch and the animals that call it home.

Take a Pottery Class

I wasn’t expecting pottery to be one of the most memorable parts of our trip, but somehow it was.

My husband and I signed up for a pottery class during our stay, and despite having absolutely no idea what we were doing, we had a blast. We spent most of the class laughing at our mistakes while the instructor patiently helped us create something that vaguely resembled pottery.

It’s a fantastic activity if you’re looking for something different from hiking or horseback riding.

Eat at Switchback

Many resorts offer good food. Cataloochee Ranch offers food that you’ll still be thinking about after you get home.

From fresh-baked focaccia and wood-fired pizzas to barbecue nights and elevated dinners, every meal we had exceeded expectations. In fact, the dining program is one of the biggest reasons I recommend the ranch so enthusiastically.

One of my favorite experiences was the Wednesday barbecue night, where guests and locals gathered together for incredible food and a welcoming community atmosphere.

Attend a Special Event

Depending on when you visit, you may also have access to unique experiences like wine tastings, educational programs, guided activities, live music, and community ranch dances.

During my first trip, we attended a ranch square dance held in the horse barn, and it turned out to be one of the most fun evenings of the entire stay. Between the dancing, drinks, and meeting locals from the surrounding area, it felt like a genuine mountain community experience rather than a typical resort event.

Some of my favorite moments at Cataloochee Ranch were the in-between, casual moments

They happened while sipping tea and watching the mountains wake up. While chilling in bed watching One Piece live action with my husband. And while grabbing a quick drink in the Tack Room after a long hike back from the Swag.

The property encourages you to intentionally slow down and take in your surroundings.

In a world where every trip seems packed with itineraries and reservations, Cataloochee Ranch reminds you that sometimes the best thing is simply to exist.

Where To Eat Nearby

I’ll be honest, I don’t think you’ll find yourself leaving Cataloochee Ranch in search of a meal very often.

The on-site dining is exceptional and was one of the highlights of both of my visits. Between the elevated dinners, fresh ingredients, delicious pastries, wine tastings, and hearty breakfasts, we were consistently impressed by the quality of the food and service.

That said, if you’re extending your trip in Maggie Valley, Waynesville, or exploring the surrounding area, there are a few local favorites worth checking out.

The Swag

If you have the opportunity to visit The Swag for lunch, do it.

Guests of Cataloochee Ranch can access The Swag via a private hiking trail. The picnic lunch offered there was one of the highlights of my second visit. Between the mountain views, delicious food, and unique setting, it’s 1000% worth it.

Joey’s Pancake House

Joey’s Pancake House is practically a Maggie Valley institution. If you’re looking for a hearty breakfast before a day of hiking or exploring the Smokies, this is one of the most popular spots in town.

Orchard Coffee

For coffee lovers, Orchard Coffee is worth the short drive. They roast their own coffee and serve some of the best specialty drinks in the area. It’s the perfect place to grab a latte before heading into Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Singletree Heritage Kitchen

If you’re looking for an elevated dining experience, Singletree Heritage Kitchen should be at the top of your list. Their focus on Appalachian ingredients and regional flavors makes it a great complement to a mountain getaway.

The Scotsman Public House

Located in nearby Waynesville, The Scotsman offers a more refined dining experience with excellent cocktails and a seasonally changing menu. It’s a great choice for a date night or a special-occasion meal.

Boojum Brewery

For a more casual atmosphere, Boojum Brewery is always a solid option. The beer selection is excellent, and the menu features everything from burgers and sandwiches to salads and shareable appetizers.

Te Te Will’s BBQ

You can’t visit Western North Carolina without considering barbecue. Te Te Will’s BBQ is a local favorite serving smoked meats, classic Southern sides, and generous portions that are perfect after a long day on the trail. This is nothing fancy, but it’s tasty.

Best Hikes Nearby

Cataloochee Ranch is perfectly positioned for travelers who want to combine a luxury mountain getaway with some of the best hiking, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks in Western North Carolina.

You can find nearby sunrise hikes, waterfall adventures, and stunning overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are plenty of incredible options within driving distance of the ranch.

Hemphill Bald

If you’re staying at Cataloochee Ranch, this is the hike I would prioritize above all others.

The private access from the ranch makes this iconic bald significantly easier to reach than the public route through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The panoramic mountain views are stunning any time of day, but sunrise here is truly unforgettable.

Honestly, Hemphill Bald deserves its own moment; it’s just that good.

Waterrock Knob

This might be one of my favorite sunset spots in all of Western North Carolina. Some of my most loved professional photos were actually taken here!

Located along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Waterrock Knob offers one of the best effort-to-reward ratios in the region.

The hike is relatively short, but the summit views are spectacular. Check the weather before you go, as this is higher up and can get socked in easily if it’s super cloudy.

Graveyard Fields

Graveyard Fields is one of the most popular stops on the Blue Ridge Parkway for good reason.

The area features beautiful waterfalls, open meadows, river crossings, and mountain views, all packed into a relatively short hike. It’s especially stunning during peak fall color season.

Mingo Falls

Mingo Falls is one of my favorite waterfalls in North Carolina and an easy addition to any Cataloochee Ranch itinerary.

The hike is short, though you’ll have to tackle a decent number of stairs to reach the overlook. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with one of the tallest and most impressive waterfalls in North Carolina.

This waterfall changes drastically with rainfall and season (trust me, I’ve visited it four times). It’s beautiful regardless, but sometimes it can have a smaller wow factor if it hasn’t rained recently.

Soco Falls

Soco Falls may be one of the most accessible waterfalls in the area, but don’t let that fool you.

This beautiful double waterfall is just a short walk from the parking area. It’s a perfect stop while exploring Maggie Valley and the surrounding mountains.

There’s also a new parking lot that is supposed to be much more convenient and safer than the previous roadside parking.

Mouse Creek Falls and Midnight Hole

Located in the Big Creek area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this hike combines two incredible destinations into one adventure.

Midnight Hole is one of my favorite swimming holes. It’s surrounded by large boulders and crystal-clear water, while Mouse Creek Falls offers a beautiful waterfall tucked away in the forest. The trail follows an old railroad grade, making it relatively approachable for most hikers.

You will need a $5 parking pass for this hike that you can purchase online.

Black Balsam Knob

If you’re willing to venture a little farther from the ranch, Black Balsam Knob is absolutely worth the drive.

The expansive mountain balds and sweeping views make it one of the most iconic hikes in North Carolina. This is just down the road from Graveyard Fields, making it a perfect pairing if you’re venturing out.

My Overall Cataloochee Ranch Review

I’ve stayed at a lot of hotels, cabins, campgrounds, and resorts over the years, and very few have left an impression on me the way Cataloochee Ranch has.

After two visits in two completely different seasons, I can confidently say that the magic of this place isn’t tied to a specific activity, accommodation, or time of year. It’s the feeling you get while you’re there.

From watching the sunrise from Hemphill Bald with no one else around to laughing your way through a pottery class you’ve clearly never done before. Plus, sharing a basket of focaccia after a wine tasting, feeding cattle with passionate ranch hands, or ending the evening by the fire looking out onto the Blue Ridge.

What impresses me most about Cataloochee Ranch is how effortlessly they create an experience that feels both luxurious and genuine. Nothing feels stuffy or overly polished. Instead, the property embraces its ranch heritage while delivering the elevated accommodations, dining, and service you’d expect for the price.
